In reply to Ellen Marlin. This is so awesome! Diversifying students’ reading materials is a great way to expose them to new vocabulary, new ideas, and maybe their new favorite book. And the PISA data show diversification, especially in long and complex texts, is also connected with higher achievement scores.

I appreciated the more detailed information on ZPDs and the research associated with them. We have our kids read within their ZPDs, although I’ve had them read below on occasion. It does help with motivation–especially in 8th grade!

We read within our ZPD, sometimes a bit above if its a popular series/title. We read every day for 30 minutes. This was a great acticle!

I put as much emphasis on book level as I do on points when setting goals with my secondary students. Too many are more interested in earning a lot of points and read low-level books. It helps when I explain to them that the type of practice they do matters as much as the amount of practice.

Great article I plan to share with my teachers. None of us have time to waste and we need to see gains in reading.. Star reading provides our ZPD for each student and AR is the plan for more reading within APD. Thanks to Renaissance we have this guide to follow!

Very informative article. I set aside at least 15 minutes at the end of the day for my students to AR test or if they finish their work before everyone else, they can test as well. They also have a dedicated time during the week to go to the library as a class to check out books or they can go everyday in the beginning of the day or at the end. This allows for my students to have plenty of opportunities to read a book of their interest thus improving their comprehension and their ZPDs.

We also have ZPD on back of library card. In kinder, I teach them how to do AR quizzes with lots of support until ready for independence.

We complete status of the class. We talk to our students all the time about their reading. We encourage them to find books that they love so they will love reading. We have a book club also to encourage “fun” reading.

I’ve seen many positive changes with how AR is managed in our district over the last decade. I remember when students were pushed to read at the high end of their zpd and points included reading time assigned to be done at home. I remember students crying because they couldn’t make their points, or reading too fast and not passing the tests. Much has changed over the years. Students ZPD is set at the lowest range. Points are only assigned on reading time provided at school. While these changes may seem to lower expectations and therefore lower our reading scores, the opposite is true. Less pressure on points and more emphasis on reading for pleasure has boosted our students’ love for reading. Many students enthusiastically read well beyond assigned points and strive to be rewarded by making the million word reader’s club.

We have a district library called ReadBox that we set up. It allows students to read books that interest them and we have a wide variety of genres to choose from.

We are always monitoring our students independent reading, and they each have their ZPD level on the back of their library card to help them when checking out books in the library. It also helps our librarian when they are down there.
