We love that you’re combining reading and science! Vocabulary is so critical, especially in the content areas. Later this month, we’ll have a whole blog post dedicated to the connections between reading and science and between reading and math. Keep an eye out for it, we think you’ll really enjoy it!

Glad to hear you’re pointing your students in the right direction for accelerated growth! If you haven’t already, be sure to read our “Maximized minutes” blog for more great insights about ZPD that you can share with students.

It was time consuming and did not give them immediate feedback. Now, the children are trained to choose out of their ZPD buckets, and they know when they are ready for a quiz, which they then are rewarded with feedback. We focus on their weekly average at times, on their growing ATOS average, as well as sharing reasons for loving a particular book or author. Having the data allows us to build and achieve goals.

We also strive for an average percent correct of 90. We do stay within the zpd range so we may want to encourage reading above it more often. Thanks for this great article.

The first quarter is the hardest to set since I don’t know what kind of reader they are yet but then once they take the MAP test, I adjust their levels accordingly. All students have an 85% comprehension goal each quarter. I keep a running record of each student’s performance. The students meet with me individually and I show them what their actual comprehension was, actual points earned, and actual average book level was for the quarter. We then decide what their goal should be for the next quarter.

I use a lot of questioning as I read and teach them to “study” the pictures and rehash what was read.

I am using graphic novels to teach science. Many novels are above the students’ zpd. Regardless, they are so anxious to test after one reading, but I am making them wait until we do more digging into the vocabulary that they would otherwise gloss over. We are doing action drawings to help learn the vocabulary. And multiple readings of the same book, which is still hard for my students to recognize the value of doing.
