School stores, pizza parties, etc. can certainly still be used, but with a slight tweak, kids can “earn” a trip to shop in the store or be part of a celebration party for meeting their goals vs. just earning a certain number of points. Even though the reward is extrinsic, the work toward reaching—and success in reaching—a goal provides powerful intrinsic motivation.

We have always done the AR Store…since the 90’s. The kids love it, but I’d like to replace with “rewarding” for meeting goals, plus this article says that outside rewards are not the biggest motivators (6%). I am not sure how to change what they have loved all these years! Our kids will say the AR store is one of the most fun times of the year.

I really enjoyed this article. I was especially interested in the Personalized Goals. I do set personalized goals for my students, but I believe the information shared in the article will help me do this more efficiently. The section on high and low literal comprehension made me review my practices. Also, I downloaded “9 Ways You Can Motivate Students to Read”. This was very interesting and helpful. I will definitely share this with my grade level.

Look at the chart that shows as kids age they have a more difficult time finding books they like. I realize this is self reported, but why? Are older kids more picky? Do they have a greater sense of self and so want a very narrow subsection of books that looks and feels more like themselves?

I set personalized reading goals for students. I also have students rate their effort on a daily basis to help them understand how effort and outcome are related. I have several bulletin boards and rewards for students who meet their goals to assist in motivating them. Students can choose any book within their ZPD to read.

We make a big deal out of small achievements. This works for those that struggle. The rest of the group helps keep them focused and motivated and we celebrate each time they pass a test and reach their goal.

My students have met their goal each testing period due to the fact that I let them choose their books. We plan their goals together, but what they read is totally up to them as long it is within their ZPD level.

This is a wonderful article! To motivate students we give students time to tell about what they are reading and what they like best about the book. We also have class competitions which seem to be very motivational in middle school! Making reading a social activity seems to be very motivating!

Personalizing and identify reading behaviors we want to see in our students is vital, especially in the early years before they have learned behaviors of avoidance. Also, read-alouds by teachers or other staff members using voice and enthusiasm encourages readers, too.
