We have been doing AR at my school for several years. We were the first school in Mississippi to become a Master Renaissance Reading School

I love that AR works for students at their individual level. I conference with each student about their scores on the STAR test, we look at their ZPD and together come up with a points goal for that student. We compile a plan to help set that student up for success and then we discuss how to make sure we grow our goal for next time.

I love that AR is individualized based on the students’ ZPDs because it allows students to read at their own levels. Our students are rewarded for reaching their goals at the end of each quarter

Great tips!!!! We have an AR party each nine weeks for the students that made their AR goal within the nine weeks. The kids LOVED it. If they do not make their goal; they will stay in the classroom with other teachers to try to make their goal, so they can join the party.

I wish we were doing the STAR Reading test. Our district does not seem to feel the same way I do. Some schools in my district are no longer using AR.

We do use all of these strategies at our school. I have independent as well as small group practice and intervention specialists for struggling readers. I allow many students to choose their books and I also assign books from time to time based on their individual levels as well as their interest.

Time is set aside daily in my classroom for independent reading. The students go to the lab every morning to practice. I read chapter books as well to the class and we test on them. These tips apply to all grade levels. Curiosity is ever present in my second graders!

Our district has done just about everything on this list! As a Renaissance Royal, the webinars and posts help keep me up-to-date on training and materials. I occasionally pass along the really good tips and tricks that come out of the Royal community to other members who have yet to make the leap and join. There has been a huge shift towards building a culture of reading. There is nothing more heartwarming than seeing students read during lunch instead of playing on their phone!

It sounds too easy! But all the research is so clear. Time must be set aside for reading every day and teachers have to guide and monitor that authentic reading practice. We are working in our schools to help teachers understand the true power of “just reading.”

A.R is a big deal at our school. All teachers regardless of who they teach encourage all students to read. When a child reaches a new point club they receive a certificate in front of the whole school. All students who make their individual goals for each quarter are also rewarded for their hard work.
