How cool! What nonfiction books are students enjoying the most?

The children love these books. We use the texts every week to study a new subject. The children will go to the book shelves that house these books when they have free reading time. These books are my students’ favorite reading materials.

Correlation between literacy, science and math has been overlooked for so long. Let’s make sure our students succeed!

Students need content area reading as well as reading class reading opportunities.

It isn’t hard to know that if they can’t read the question they can’t get the answer. But the data on missing questions that were written at a lower level was surprising. Is it the stress of reading? Seems to me that this is also further evidence that teaching with just short test prep passages is a disservice and will come back to haunt us.

WE all know that to get better at anything, one must practice. Why are we still looking for the magic pill that will correct the issue. We must provide time for students to practice reading AND talking about their reading….That’s how we will improve our scores.

I loved using them as a starter and letting kids read them for independent time later.

The students were thrilled. They read in groups and discussed and drew major ideas about Newton’s Laws. Sadly, too many students rushed to take their AR tests thinking the tests would be easy, which taught me a lesson about reminding the students to do repeated readings and even providing graphic organizers for higher level books. Just because they come with cartoons, doesn’t make them easy books.

Of course reading skills impact math… especially word problems.

Many students don’t get first-hand experiences, so anything we can give them to increase their learning helps.
