Announcing the field test for Star CBM Reading Español
The pathway to learning to read in Spanish is different from the pathway to learning to read in English. Star CBM Reading Español is a new interim assessment tool that reflects the unique pedagogy of Spanish reading development to better support students acquiring reading skills in Spanish.
Teachers administering Star CBM Reading Español measures will gain instant insight into their students’ strengths and weaknesses in the foundations of literacy in Spanish. With this information, they’ll be better equipped to guide students as they’re learning to read.
You may already be familiar with Star CBM, which debuted during the 2020–2021 school year, with over 1.8 million measures given in its first year. Star CBM Reading Español is a new extension of this popular tool, providing insights into the reading development of emergent bilingual students.
Star CBM Reading Español is designed to support K–6 students receiving instruction in Spanish with the goal of biliteracy. The measures are being developed authentically in Spanish in consultation with experts in the field. Measures range from letter sounds to reading authentic texts, including the most important literacy-building milestones in between.
Educators from across the country are participating in a field test of Star CBM Reading Español during the 2021–2022 school year. Field testing is a crucial part of the process of developing a psychometrically robust assessment tool that is valid and reliable.
As part of this one-of-a-kind field test experience, participant feedback will influence product development in building this new, best-in-class Spanish reading assessment. Each teacher will get their own classroom-level field test data to better support their students in acquiring reading skills in Spanish.
They’ll also have opportunities to participate in curated professional learning from leading experts in the field.
